Bo-Kaap, Braai and a moving demonstration

Our Thursday at the Museum of Illusions

On Thursday, we visited the Museum of Illusions with Class 4. The trip was great fun for all of us. The children’s excitement was truly lovely to see – and we teachers enjoyed it just as much. There was lots of laughter, amazement, and of course plenty to try out.

Toll!

South African Hospitality: An Evening at a Braai

At TAUS, I have a very nice  colleague, Helena. She originally comes from Cape Town and now lives in Germany. Her father invited us to a traditional South African barbecue – here, this is called a braai. The food was delicious, and we spent a really lovely evening together. It was indoor grilling of a very special kind – wonderful!

Between Illness and Moving Moments: Fever, Netflix and a Demonstration

Then on Sunday, I woke up with a fever and spent several days in bed afterwards. For me – and for Markus – it was awful, because I am a very impatient and  nasty patient. So, there was not much else I could do except watch Netflix for hours.

On Wednesday, I was back on my feet for the first time and went outside for a bit of fresh air. On the way, I passed a demonstration. I do not really know why it caught my attention immediately, but I stopped and stayed.

They were women protesting against femicide and violence against women. Their singing was deeply moving. At one point, a woman called out, ‘I was 24!’ Then the call spread through the crowd: ‘ I was 51 … I was14 …’

In that moment, I really had tears in my eyes. Once I got home, I did some research and learned that violence against women in South Africa is particularly high by international comparison. The femicide rate is also significantly above the global average.
