Poverty and at the same time, such breathtaking beauty

Tonight we enjoyed a sundowner on the rooftop terrace of our new apartment – and we’re still speechless because of the view. Our new home is right in the centre of Cape Town, on the 12th floor of a high-rise building with security at the entrance. There’s a swimming pool and a gym on the rooftop. On one side, you have a direct view of Table Mountain, and on the other side, you can see across the city all the way to the ocean. Simply breathtaking! The apartment itself is old, a little worn and definitely in need of renovation – but it’s only going to be our home for a few months.

Today, Octavious wasn’t at school (I usually go to school with him), so I met up with my colleague Nicki. We took an Uber together to Sharon’s house, got into her car and then, in the township, joined other teachers on the school bus. We went back again in the afternoon.
Driving through the township was intense. It’s a completely different world. You see children playing and jumping around between corrugated iron shacks – and just a few hours later, you’re sitting on the rooftop of a high-rise building, enjoying a sundowner with a view of Table Mountain and the ocean.
The contrast between the worlds in South Africa is incredible: so much poverty and, at the same time, such breathtaking beauty.
